Me and Kieran are going to Argentina this week for the 20th anniversary celebrations of Caja Negra, the Buenos Aires publisher who have put out nearly all of the books of mine that have been translated into Spanish.
Actually it takes four to tango because the panel event we are doing on Saturday November 15 at 7pm at the Deseo Club is a quadraphonic colloquy with Argentinian writers Pablo Schanton and Antonia Kon.
The event is wittily titled PresentemanĂa - and you guessed it, Kieran is there to represent the present: the !NOW!-minded younger generation of music critics. I, inevitably, will be there to stand for the past-it cohort. Yes, it's all a bit of a set-up but I shall graciously accept my role as the grizzled old fart in the rocking chair mumbling about Omni Trio and Associates.
Still, who gets top billing, eh? Eh?
I have no idea if this lot have any cred in Argentina but I have long loved this tune

I have gotten into Charlie Garcia, Alberto Luis Spinetta and some Soda Stereo over the last 5 years (to name a few Argentine rockers). Garcia especially was a bit of a kindred spirit with the UK New Pop in the early 80s. Clics Modernos is a nutty and frenetic album (Garcia even looks like Sparks' Ron Mael)! I am a native Spanish speaker (half Mexican) but Spanish language rock has evaded me for many years. The fairly recent Netflix Rompan Todo pointed me in this direction.

I just checked to see what Charly Garcia has been up to as of late. We'll, he just recorded an English language duet with Sting! It's...uh something. Please don't let that scare you off if you arent familiar with Garcia. Piano Bar is the other new wave style album of his. Garcia was a former prog-rocker as well. Strange guy with some truly odd yet catchy tunes.
ReplyDeleteYou can expect the billings to reverse very soon! Have fun in Argentina, Asif. P.S. Love me some Gotan Project. That first album was so good.
